SAN DIEGO — The Brawley Union and Southwest high school boys basketball teams suffered losses in the Montgomery tournament here Thursday.

The Wildcats fell 57-45 to Montgomery while the Eagles were grounded 59-39 by Grossmont.

"We had a couple of guys who were injured," said Brawley assistant coach Rahsahn Overton. "We had to rely on our younger guys to pick up the slack and they need more playing time."

Mark Rivera led the Wildcats (4-5) with 16 points and four steals. Miguel Melendrez added 10 points, Lafayette Lofton had eight points and six rebounds and Carlos Corral chipped in seven points and six boards.

Brawley played the Aztecs even through a quarter and trailed by three at the half 27-24.

However, a lackluster Brawley squad appeared after intermission and allowed Montgomery to open a 10-point lead midway through the third period. Rivera drilled one of his team-high four three-pointers to pull the score to 41-32 at the end of the third quarter.

Montgomery pushed its advantage back to 10 points to start the final quarter before Rivera and Lofton led the Wildcats back. Lofton hit a basket and Rivera drained another three and hit two free throws to bring the score to 44-39. Five points was as close as Brawley could get as the Aztecs closed the game with a 13-6 run.

Overton thinks his team could turn things around in the tournament.

"We have to come out every night and play," he said. "It's tough to travel. We just need to get here, be healthy, alert, focus and get after it."
