IMPERIAL — A 34-year-old Imperial man was charged Thursday with arson for allegedly setting fire to his parents' home.

Michael Ygnacio Anchondo was officially charged by the county District Attorney's Office. He was expected to be arraigned at 1:30 today.

Anchondo was arrested by Imperial police shortly after he reportedly used a lighter to set a bed on fire in his parents' home at 512 N. C St. on Wednesday.

According to police, Anchondo was upset with his parents, who were away from the house when the fire started.

Around 2 a.m., police alleged, Anchondo ignited the fire, then left the house.

He reportedly was found by police hiding behind a residence close to his parents' home.

Police said Anchondo had called his sister to say he was going to start the fire. Moments after he made that call the fire erupted.

Firefighters from Imperial County, El Centro, Brawley and Holtville were called to aid in extinguishing the blaze.

The home was destroyed. Little remained inside the residence by daybreak Wednesday.
