CALIPATRIA — A 25-year-old Fresno man imprisoned here died from stab wounds Thursday morning.

County Coroner Sgt. Rick Macken said the stabbing occurred when the inmate, Eflong U. McKelvy, was headed to breakfast with a group of men at Calipatria State Prison. Another inmate, with a second group, stabbed him twice in the upper chest with an inmate-manufactured weapon.

Lt. Thelma Swetich, prison public information officer, said the stabbing occurred on the roadway to the dining facility from facility B, which houses level four general population inmates. Level four inmates are considered the highest security risk.

She said cardiopulmonary resuscitation was started at the scene. The victim was taken to the prison's central health facility where CPR was continued without success.

Macken said McKelvy was pronounced dead at 7:31 a.m.

Swetich said another inmate was detained but until he is charged with the crime she cannot release any information about him. She said the motive for the killing remains unknown to investigators, as does where the weapon came from, but an investigation is under way.

A weapon was found with blood on it, Swetich added.

Swetich said McKelvy was doing time for assault with a deadly weapon.
