El Centro police arrested a 34-year-old man on suspicion of petty theft following a foot chase through an alley and over fences in the 700 block of Woodward Avenue on Saturday.

Manuel Ontiveros Gadillo of El Centro was booked into the county jail without bail based on an alleged parole violation. He had served time in state prison for a burglary conviction.

El Centro police Sgt. Mike Crankshaw said a man walked out of his home on Woodward about 4 a.m. to find another man in his car.

The man chased the second man, later identified as Gadillo, down the street and managed to catch him, but the second man escaped. Gadillo reportedly had taken a stereo from the other man's car.

El Centro police Officer Aaron Reel responded to the scene, took the report from the man and put out the call to other officers.

Officer Murray Estabrook spotted Gadillo on Woodward and he and other responding officers gave chase. Gadillo reportedly led them into the alley and over fences before officers were able to catch him.

Gadillo remained in custody as of Saturday night. Police recovered the car stereo.
