>>50 years ago — 1st Lt. Richard Thompson, 21, Holtville, won the Silver Star for gallant conduct in action in Korea recently. Thompson won the award for his actions when a platoon of combat engineers prepared a tank trail to an enemy strong point near Saegobe, Korea.

>>40 years ago — The Imperial County Board of Supervisors will conduct a public hearing at 3 p.m. today on the proposed annexation of the unincorporated area west of Brawley known as the Rio Vista Development.

>>30 years ago — Shortly after 2 p.m. New Year's Day, 8-pound, 10-ounce Sylvia Romero became Imperial County's first baby of 1972. The infant arrived at 1:49 a.m. at Imperial General Hospital, the 10th child born to Mr. and Mrs. Refugio Romero of El Centro.

>>20 years ago — The Valley's first baby born in 1982 entered the world at 12:08 a.m. Friday. He is Michael William Robert Johnson, the first child of El Centrans Michael and Marilyn Johnson. Michael weighed seven pounds and one ounce and was 19 inches long.
