Girl, 8, scared straight by ECPD

January 05, 2002|By AARON CLAVERIE, Staff Writer

A police sergeant led a crying 8-year-old girl to the El Centro Police Department's holding cell on Friday afternoon.

After a brief "tour" the girl was released to the custody of her aunt and grandmother.

El Centro police Sgt. Mike Crankshaw said he showed the girl the cell at her grandmother's request.

On Friday afternoon, the grandmother called the department to ask for help.

According to the grandmother, the girl needed counseling because she took a bracelet that didn't belong to her. Crankshaw said it was an aunt's bracelet.

When the aunt noticed her missing bracelet on her niece's wrist, the little girl said she had "found" it.

Crankshaw said the department helps parents or guardians in such situations in order to scare kids straight.

Crankshaw said the grandmother is the girl's guardian.
