Thank You: Bike giveaway program plaudits

January 05, 2002

One of the great joys of the holiday season for me is to present local students with newly refurbished bicycles, courtesy of the efforts of Volunteers of America ADSC and Calipatria State Prison. Because the bicycles are hand-delivered, the staff members at Calipatria State Prison and VOA do not get to see the smiles that I see each year. But every bicycle is appreciated, and every recipient is thrilled, and all who are touched by the efforts of CSP and VOA are truly blessed at this time of year.

Dear VOA: Thank you for my new bike. You gave it to me on my birthday. It made my mom cry because I would have had no presents without your help. My teacher gave me a cake, too, so my birthday was very special this year. — Mayra Acosta, third grade, El Centro.

Dear VOA: I wanted a bicycle and someone got and gave me one. I don't know Aunt Ruth, but they told me she's a good person and a good aunt … I wanted a bicycle to work on the newspaper. So thank you for my new bicycle blue! — Jose Sandoval, eighth grade, El Centro.

Dear VOA: I am a student at IVC. I depend on the bus for transportation, but now I'll have a little more freedom with my schedule. Thank you for the bicycle. — Daniel Velasquez, Heber.

On behalf of all 29 recipients this year, I would like to add my own thank you to Ruth Croker, Denise Ryan, Nan Rebik and Don Gorham for their efforts on this project and for all they do within the community throughout the year.
