Inmates escapes from Pioneers

January 05, 2002

BRAWLEY — As soon as the Imperial County Sheriff's Office deputies drove away, a 22-year-old woman suffering from an infection bolted from the emergency room of Pioneers Memorial Hospital here.

According to the ER's unit coordinator, the deputies brought a "very sick" and handcuffed woman wearing an Imperial County jail jumpsuit into the ER around 7 p.m. Friday.

The deputies didn't tell hospital staffers why the woman, Maricela Moreno, had been in jail.

The unit coordinator said anyone who knows where Moreno is needs to direct her to a hospital. If the infection is not treated soon it could be life-threatening, he said.

The coordinator said he thinks Moreno might be a Brawley resident but he wasn't sure.

Moreno was described as a stocky Latina with short-cropped hair.
