A Holtville man accused of trying to swipe goods from the El Centro Wal-Mart at 7:15 p.m. Friday allegedly brawled with two employees in the parking lot fronting the home and garden department.
The El Centro Police Department and Imperial County Sheriff's Office responded to the call at the North Imperial Avenue store.
After deputies apprehended the man, they found he had a warrant for his arrest.
At 8:55 p.m. Friday night, Edward Garcia of Holtville was booked into county jail on suspicion of robbery and battery connected with the Wal-Mart incident and corporal injury to a spouse from an outstanding complaint.
His combined bail was set at $26,000.
El Centro police Sgt. Mike Crankshaw said Garcia would have been accused of theft and not robbery had there not been a scuffle with the two employees.
"For robbery there has to be ‘force or fear' associated with theft," Crankshaw said.
