January 07, 2002|By MARIO RENTERÍA, Staff Writer

El Centro police arrested two Heber residents Sunday after police discovered methamphetamine inside the vehicle in which they were traveling.

El Centro police Sgt. Mike Beltran said an officer stopped a vehicle near Adams Avenue and Eighth Street about 9:30 a.m. Sunday for a minor traffic violation.

The driver, Daniel Gonzalez, 30, and passenger Manuel Figueroa Escalante, 25, permitted police to search the vehicle.

Police, with the help of a canine unit from the U.S. Border Patrol, found a sizable amount of methamphetamine inside the vehicle.

Beltran said he didn't know the actual amount but it was more than what one person would use.

Both men were arrested for possession of methamphetamine for sale and transportation of methamphetamine.

Gonzalez has been released from country jail on a bail bond, according to a representative from county jail. Escalante remained in jail today with bail set at $10,000.
