>>50 years ago — An Imperial Valley road committee voted 7-1 favoring a temporary route to Blythe via Glamis. The committee, made up representatives of Valley chambers of commerce, passed a resolution asking county supervisors to request the U.S. Navy build an access road to connect the Imperial and Palo Verde valleys.

>>40 years ago — Rehearsals are under way every night for the "Magic Flute," light opera by Mozart, which will be presented in Palmer Auditorium in Brawley Jan. 14, 16 and 18. With the exception of one part, the "Queen of Night," the cast will be made up entirely of Valleyites.

>>30 years ago — Although she hasn't been officially crowned Miss Naval Air Facility yet, 24-year-old Claire Lotti's first formal function will be to welcome the Blue Angels to the El Centro Naval Air Facility. The Blues Angels are due for their seventh season of rigorous training in the Valley.

>>20 years ago — Nearly 12,300 pounds of surplus cheese will be distributed to the needy in the next several days by two social agencies in the Valley. The Economic Opportunity Commission and Campesinos Unidos Inc. were working on plans today to distribute cheese obtained from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
