CALIPATRIA — A driver of a sport-utility vehicle led county Sheriff's Office deputies on a pursuit along a canal ditch bank near here Monday.

The driver managed to escape deputies when he stopped his vehicle and fled into a cattle feed yard, according to sheriff's officials.

The pursuit started about 6:30 p.m. when Deputy Peter Fuentes attempted to stop the SUV for a taillight violation at Highway 111 and Sinclair Road.

Officials said the driver refused to yield and instead drove onto a ditch bank.

At speeds of about 30 mph, the driver led deputies on a chase along the ditch bank for about five miles.

The driver then stopped his vehicle at Brandt and Hoober roads and ran into a feedlot.

Officials said they searched the area but could not find the driver.

There was no information as to why the driver fled deputies. The vehicle was seized.
