CALEXICO — A 13-year-old girl was attacked by two men Tuesday as she walked on a residential street here near the retention basin known as Milpitas Park.

The Calexico Police Department is treating the case as an attempted rape.

Calexico police Sgt. Jim Neujahr said the girl was walking alone in the 500 block of Andrade Avenue about 6:30 p.m. when a car approached her.

Two men got out of the vehicle and forced the girl to the ground, Neujahr said based on reports from the girl and neighbors in the area.

The girl screamed, alerting neighbors who came out of their homes. Neujahr said as soon as the neighbors came out, the men got back in their car and left.

The girl was not injured, he added.

The vehicle was described as a black Honda or Nissan Maxima with Baja California plates.

Police declined to release specific information on the attackers because of the investigation. They did say both men were Hispanic and thought to be in their 20s.

Neujahr said witnesses reported seeing two other men in the car who did not get out of the vehicle during the attack.

Police are investigating whether that vehicle is tied to other crimes in the area.

Neujahr said two weeks ago a robbery occurred in the area during which a man was beaten and had his money stolen. The description of the vehicle and those involved in that case matched the descriptions of those involved in the attack on the girl.

Police are asking that anyone with information about the case to call police at 768-2140.
