CALEXICO — A 23-year-old Brawley woman died from injuries sustained when the car she was driving struck a power pole here Wednesday.

Claudia Jessie Gonzalez died in El Centro Regional Medical Center following her accident on Cole Road near Pruitt Road.

Gonzalez's newborn daughter was in a child-safety seat in the back of the vehicle and was not injured.

The accident occurred about 8:30 a.m. as Gonzalez drove west on Cole.

Calexico police Sgt. Jim Neujahr said it was unclear what led Gonzalez to run her car into the power pole. Police are investigating whether she may have been tending to her daughter, causing her to take her eyes of the road.

An autopsy to determine the cause of Gonzalez's death is set for Saturday, although officials with the county Coroner's Office speculated the cause may be blunt force trauma to the neck.

Gonzalez was trapped in the vehicle and had to be freed by Calexico firefighters using the Jaws of Life.

Fire officials said Gonzalez had been wearing her seat belt.
