January 11, 2002|By DARREN SIMON, Staff Writer

BRAWLEY — A car careened into a tractor-trailer rig east of here Thursday after the rig driver attempted a U-turn on Highway 78 and became stuck and blocked both lanes.

The driver of the car, Mark Silva, 55, of Janesville, suffered minor injuries in the collision, which occurred at 5:45 p.m. on the highway near Butters Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the big rig, driven by 42-year-old Jarnail Singh of Fresno, was heading west when Singh attempted a U-turn.

Highway Patrol officials said he was unable to complete the turn and his rig ended up blocking both lanes of the highway.

Silva, traveling east on the highway, reportedly did not see the rig until it was too late. His car collided with the rear of the rig.

Silva was trapped for a half hour before he could be freed by Brawley firefighters using the Jaws of Life.

The highway was closed for about an hour as authorities dealt with the accident scene.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
