Thank You: Ruth Croker makes the holidays better for many children

January 11, 2002

A very special thank you to Ruth Croker for putting smiles on so many children.

For the last decade many children from the less fortunate homes of Imperial County have been able to smile during the holidays. Many of these children would not have any gifts to open for Christmas or have a decent meal on their table for the holidays. Over the years hundreds of children from our county have been the recipients of the kindness and good heart that Ms. Croker has.

For the last decade Ms. Croker has worked year-round every year organizing events, fund raisers and meeting with representatives from businesses to contribute to her efforts of helping children smile during the holidays. She has devoted countless hours of hard work that have produced thousands and thousands of toys that are distributed to the poor and less fortunate children of Imperial County.

This year about 150 food boxes were distributed to families that were pre-screened based on income and need.

This past year, Ms. Croker and the agency that she works for, Volunteers of America, organized a golf tournament at Broken Spoke in El Centro with the money raised used to buy toys and food boxes for the needy families and children.

I met Ms. Croker while I was working for the Imperial Valley Food Bank and she approached me about working together to provide the toys and food boxes and distributing them at the food bank facility. It was an excellent idea that hopefully continues for years to come, the two non-profit agencies working together to provide toys and food to the less fortunate during the holiday season.

Sometimes people who dedicate countless hours of volunteer work in an effort to provide a better life for others go unnoticed. Ms. Croker is one of those people who devotes many hours of hard work "behind the scenes" and goes by unrecognized for all of her efforts.

The holiday season is gone but many children continue to have a smile in their faces because they can play with the toys that the efforts of Ms. Croker and many others brought them for Christmas.

On behalf of the many children and families of Imperial County who were recipients of food boxes and toys, I would like to thank Ruth Croker for her effort, dedication and leadership in helping out the less fortunate of Imperial County. Thank you, Ruth, and God bless you.
