Cardenas sweeps events at swim meet

Imperial Valley Desert Aquatics swimmer Jennifer Cardenas swept all six events she swam in at the Escondido Ironman B/C swim meet recently.

Cardenas, 16 and a junior at Brawley High, won the girls age 15-18 "B" division 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 33.87 seconds. She also won the 50 freestyle (28.21), the 100 backstroke (1:15.82), the 200 free (2:12.65), the 100 butterfly (1:06.79) and the 100 free (1:01.15).

Cardenas' younger sister, Natalia, 14 and a freshman at Brawley High, won four events. She won the girls' 13-14 "B" 50 free (28.58), the 100 back (1:14.94), the 100 fly (1:10.98) and the "C" 200 free (2:21.06).

El Centro wrestlers

triumph at own meet

Five members of the El Centro Junior Wrestling Club won their divisions at the club's 12th annual tournament Saturday at Southwest High. More than 300 youth wrestlers from Imperial and San Diego counties participated in the first open freestyle tournament of the season.

Earning first-place honors were Alonso Osuna (bantam age division, 50 pounds), Tony Ramos (midget, 55), Alfonso Osuna (novice, 65), Ricardo Beltran (schoolboy, 125/130) and James Smith (schoolboy, 110).

Four El Centro Junior Wrestling Club members also competed Dec. 29 in the Sunkist Kids Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. James Smith placed first in the 13-year-old schoolboy 115-pound division. Alphonso Osuna III won the 11-12 age novice 70-pound flight, pinning all his opponents. Alonzo Osuna won the bantam 6-7 age 50-pound class and Marc Sawyer Smith won the 8-9 age midget 60-pound division.

Brawley Gladiators pin honors

Nine members of the Brawley Gladiators took top honors in their divisions at the San Diego-Imperial Kids Wrestling Association El Centro Duel-in-the-Desert tournament Saturday.

Placing first were Nick Torres (rookie division, 45 pounds), Donovin Buck (rookie, 55), Vinney Elizalde (bantam, 40), Oscar Lizarraga (midget, 60), Steve Elizalde (novice, 70), Kenny Skillman (novice, 100), Rusty Garcia (novice, heavyweight), Chauncy Rowe (schoolboy, 120) and Cameron Bender (cadet, 125).

Imperial wrestlers place at

Southwest tourney

Five wrestlers from the Imperial Junior Wrestling Club won their classes at the first open tournament over the weekend held at Southwest High in El Centro.

Earning top honors were Jonathan Calhoun (bantam division), Cameron McNeer (novice) and Raymond Elizalde, Emiliano Valenzuela and Derrick Wilson (schoolboy).

Hoops Shoot winners named

Chance Armstrong and Marixol S. Garcia were the big winners in the El Centro Lodge 1325 Elks Hoops Shoot. Armstrong won the 12-13 age boys flight and Garcia took top honors in the 12-12 girls division. Placing behind Armstrong were El Centro's Shane Hendry and Benny Carter. El Centro's Danielle Couch and Crystal Cortez placed behind Garcia.

Placing in the 10-11 age boys division were El Centro's Shane Goff, first; Michael Delgado, second; Brawley's Steve Escalera, third. Brittany Couch of El Centro won the 10-11 age girls flight. Placing in the 8-9 age boys division were George Legakes, first; Gerardo Cortez, second; and Isaac Santa Cruz, third, all of El Centro. Placing in the 8-9 age girls flight were Shannon Carrillo, first, and Shelby Carrillo, second, both of Brawley.

BMX racing

The Imperial Valley BMX Association staged a full program Saturday night. Arturo Morales was the big winner, capturing the 17 expert class.

Imperial Valley Speedway

Mark Allison won the modified division at the Imperial Valley Speedway on Saturday night.

Eric Evans finished second and Bill Miller placed third.

Tony Lentz won the pro stock class, followed by David White and Dave Amos.

Aldolfo Noriega captured first place in the factory stocks division. Bobby Horton took second and Steven Ashcraft was third.
