Three injured in possible DUI accident

BRAWLEY — Three people suffered minor to moderate injuries near here Sunday when the driver of a pickup lost control of the vehicle while allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

The driver, July Rubalcaba, 25, of Brawley was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and was released to El Centro Regional Medical Center for care.

He suffered moderate injuries when the pickup he was driving rolled on Highway 86 north of Austin road at 1:40 a.m.

Two passengers, both of Brawley, also were hurt. Ray Ruiz, 21 suffered minor injuries. He was not taken to a hospital.


Rodrigo Cossio, 21, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley.

All three were wearing seat belts.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Rubalcaba was driving at a high rate of speed north on Highway 86 when he drove off the road.

The pickup then rolled several times, coming to rest on the east dirt shoulder.

All three people in the pickup were able to extricate themselves from the truck.

Rubalcaba was then reportedly determined to be under the influence of alcohol.

Information was unavailable this morning on whether he remained in the hospital. There also was no information on whether Cossio remained in Pioneers.

The case remained under investigation this morning.
