Wildcats maul Palo VErde

BRAWLEY — Brawley Union High's wrestling squad won every match except for one Tuesday in demolishing visiting Palo Verde High 74-6.

The Wildcats earned pins in eight of the 12 weight classes they won as they continued their march toward repeating as league champs. They won two other matches by default.

Brawley's Michael Soza stopped Anthony Matthews at 1:23 of the second round at 103 pounds. The Wildcats' David Villagran pinned Lester Shinault at 2:21 of the second round at 112. Brawley's Michael Duffy humbled Eddie Hudson at 1:38 of the second round at 125. The Wildcats' Cesar Mendez tagged Cesar Rocha at the 1:59 mark at 130.

Brawley's Stephen Moreno downed Norman Taylor at the 3:10 mark at 140. The Wildcats' Anthony Cardenas defeated Eric Breshears in 3:01 at 145. Brawley's Steven Duran made quick work of Bryan Perez, posting his fall at 160 pounds in 40 seconds. Brawley's Jose Gutierrez drilled Heath Ramsey at the 1:23 mark of the first round at 171.

The Wildcats' Bobby Myers decisioned Gabe Carter 26-9 at 152 pounds. Brawley's Mark Martinez scored a 22-5 decision over Kelani Kalanui at 189. The Wildcats' Richie Arriquivez decisioned Ernie Shaw 14-4 in the heavyweight class.

Brawley's lone loss came at 215, where David Solid was pinned in the second round by Loreno Garnica.

Brawley hosts Holtville at 7 p.m. Jan. 23.
