Comeback heroics key Spartans

The Central Union High School soccer squad hurdled over Holtville in the last minutes of a soccer match Tuesday night.

The Spartans, now with a league record of 2-1, (5-8-3 overall) beat Holtville 4-2. Holtville now has a league record of 0-4, 5-4 overall.

Holtville opened the scoring in the fifth minute of play with a goal from Jose Arroyo. In the 30th minute Holtville teammate Andrew Castillo scored the second goal of the game.

Central answered two minutes later after the referee called a penalty kick for the Spartans after a hand-ball inside the goalkeeper box by a Holtville defender. Alberto Martinez scored the penalty kick.


In the second half Central tied the game in the 15th minute when Jovan Villanueva scored Central's second goal.

Francisco Espinosa, off a cross, headed the ball into the net to give Central the 3-2 lead. Abraham Villanueva scored Central's final goal on a shot from outside the goalkeeper box.

"It was a good game," said Juan Arroyo, Holtville head coach "We didn't score on our goal opportunities and they did."

Central head coach Jim Graham said, "I was thrilled about our performance."

"I knew it was going to be a tough game," he added.

Holtville will face Vincent Memorial at 5 p.m. Friday in Holtville while Central will head to Brawley to challenge the Wildcats at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
