Voice: My life as a dog

January 18, 2002

Here I am in the back yard. I have a collar around my neck with a chain attached to it. The chain is about 8 feet long and it is attached to an iron rod.

I have a small house. I am surrounded by a 6-foot fence and I see nothing but my back yard. There's nothing to do except walk eight feet in any direction. This is the way I live.

I look forward to the weekends because my master takes me with him during his run. I get a chance to see some of the outside. I don't understand why he doesn't do it every day.

I'm am of medium size and wish I could do more and be more active. I have a large dish of dried dog food most of the time. Once in a while I get a bone or some leftovers. I also have an extra large dish of water so I won't run out. My bathroom facilities are behind my little house and if the master forgets to clean up it gets messy.

The neighbor next door has three yapping dogs and they seem to yap early a.m. and late p.m. and periodically during the day. They are lucky. They have a 25- or 30-foot fenced runway. Oh yes! I also have a cat that passes through once in a while, relieving itself. I do enjoy the birds that fly in the yard.

How many times I wonder what life would be on the outside? I also wonder why some people buy pets? I guess that's why they call it "A Dog's Life"

Visiting cat, "What's your name?"

Chained up dog, "Tarzan."

Need I say more?
