>>40 years ago — County Democrats have picked up 485 voters on the Republican Party since January 1960, according to figures released today by County Clerk Harry Free. Democrats now have 12,533 registered to the Republicans' 7,412.

>>30 years ago — Baja California's most pressing problem — salinity — will be turned over to Mexican President Luis Echeverria Alvarez and U.S President Richard M. Nixon for a possible solution this spring. Mexico seeks a means of obtaining irrigation water that doesn't pick up the additional salt pollution prior to entering irrigation waterways.

>>20 years ago — A California Highway Patrol officer and two men suffered major injuries late Monday when a southbound pickup crashed into a CHP patrol car alongside Forrester Road, a CHP spokesman said today. The officer, Stanley Oertel, 27, and an Indio resident, identified as Michael Pierson, 35, were reportedly assisting a disabled pedestrian when they were struck by 18-year-old motorist, Juana Covarrubias of Imperial.
