Voice: Join in Sanctity of Life day/week

January 19, 2002

I invite you to join us as we observe Sanctity of Life Sunday and Sanctity of Life Week Jan. 20-27. This date has been selected because it is the Sunday closest to the date Jan. 22, when 29 years ago, the United States legalized abortion.

We encourage you to pray at your homes and churches that we all might recognize the sanctity of life. Sanctity by definition is "holiness of life and character: godliness, inviolability, sacredness. Our lives are sacred because we are made in the image of God."

Psalm 139 tells us plainly God knows everyone long before the world does.

We were just reminded during the Christmas season of when life begins. We see in the book of Luke that when Mary visited Elizabeth that John, six months from conception in his mother's womb, leaps for joy at the presence of his savior, Jesus, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit only days before! What a powerful example of life at conception.

Our world today seems to have gone far from God's value system. A college professor presented this challenging situation for his ethics class to consider. "A man has syphilis and his wife has tuberculosis. They have four children. One has died, the other three have terminal illnesses. The mother is pregnant again. What do you recommend? The class voted to terminate the pregnancy. The professor noted they had just killed Beethoven (His magazine February 1984.)

What God sees is different than what we see.

Ethel Waters, the great gospel singer, was born to a 13-year-old child who had been raped. In this difficult situation she could have been robbed of her life and the world would have been robbed of her beautiful, sacred music, if life had not been valued by her mother and those around her.

God is the creator of life. He has created us to live. We encourage everyone hearing this, to ask God how you can help every child to be born and every pregnant woman to give birth. Maybe you can start at your own home or workplace by loving each individual, believing each person has been created for a special purpose, first, to belong to God, through the blood of Jesus, then as Ephesians 2:10 says, we are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Teach others the value of life by the way you act.

The horrifying statistic that 3,000 to 4,000 babies lose their lives to abortion every day in the United States speaks of many broken hearts and lives greatly confused about when life begins and the right of each baby to be born. Many women feel trapped at first and just need someone to talk to about how they can give birth to their baby. Oftentimes others pressure the woman to abort. she needs a friend to talk to. Many men carry scars of being a part of an abortion. They need to feel God's love and forgiveness. Be there for them!

Take time to pray. Ask God to show you what you can do. Pray that we would no longer see abortion in the United States as a viable option.

We hope to hear that many churches spent time making congregations more aware of the travesty of so many lives being taken daily and powerful times of prayer to God for those who have already been left with guilt and pain due to abortion as well as those even today considering abortion is their only choice, when we need to be telling them God has a plan.

Please add your prayer with others all across the United States today as we remember together the sanctity of life.
