Thank You: Toys for Tots plaudits

January 19, 2002

This year's U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots drive was once again a success in Imperial County. The presence of the Marines generated both a patriotic and giving spirit in people this year. Due to their presence, 650 toys were distributed to needy children across Imperial County.

We would like to thank Maj. Robert Underwood, Staff Sgt. Denson and their staff of the Yuma Marine Corps Air Station for allowing us to be a part of their annual toy drive. Thank you to Golden Corral, who generously fed the five hungry Marines who were sent to stand for hours in front of stores on Dec. 13.

KYMA Channel 11 also played a big part by providing live news coverage and kept the information flowing to the public. Thanks Jim, Carlos, Natalie and Sal for their enthusiasm and genuine caring.

We also appreciate the media coverage by KSSB, KQVO, KICO, Imperial Valley Press and El Sol. The information given to the public is so important for events such as this.

The following stores and organizations participated as collection sites: Calexico Wal-Mart, El Centro Wal-Mart, Sears, city of El Centro and Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District and Vons in Brawley. You and all your employees were wonderful.

We are very grateful to Bea at the Valley Plaza Shopping Center for allowing us to use an empty office to store all the toys for distribution.

The toys collected went to Casa Villanueva, Neighborhood House, Catholic Charities, House of Hope, The Salvation Army, Center for Family Solutions shelter, Boys & Girls Club and Niland Family Resource Center. Thank you for all the work you do during the holidays and all year long.

And finally, to all of you who donated a toy, may you remember the smile of a child all year long.
