Voice: Press providing good service by mentioning dean's list honorees

January 19, 2002

Mr. Benjamin Reyes of New York City, who has two bachelor's degrees but messed up and missed the dean's list once, has chosen to take a gratuitous shot at the I.V. Press and Jennifer Otero.

Being on the dean's list at a highly rated school like the University of California is worthy of note. I don't know the Oteros, father and daughter, but I think it is a bit paranoid of Mr. Reyes to ascribe sinister motives to the I.V. Press.

When measured against its goal of serving subscribers and the community, the Press does an admirable job, even when comparing the N.Y. Times' level of service to its particular constituency.

Mr. Reyes, being right there in New York City, might find considerable room for journalistic improvement right at hand. He could work on the sappy, provincial, self-agrandizing (but entertaining) Sunday wedding coverage in the New York Times.
