Hornets upset Wildcats 31-26

CALIPATRIA — For the first time in Calipatria High School history, the girls basketball team defeated Brawley Union High, doing so 31-26 here Tuesday in Imperial Valley League action.

Lilian Humble scored 11 points to lead Calipatria. Sophia Perez added eight and Maria Velarde and Natasha Jackson both chipped in six for the Hornets.

The Hornets outshot the Wildcats 15-6 from the free-throw line and outrebounded Brawley 46-31.

Said Calipatria coach Les Boop: "In the 22 or 24 years we've been playing girls basketball at this school, Calipat has never beaten Brawley. So I think this is the biggest win we've ever had in the Valley."

Amy Williams had eight points to lead Brawley.

Calipatria (2-2 IVL) will host Julian at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Brawley (1-2 IVL) will play at Southwest High in El Centro at 7 p.m. Thursday.


Holtville 76, Calexico 43

HOLTVILLE — Mykell Johnson led five Vikings in double figures with 20 points, as Holtville beat Calexico 76-43 Tuesday in Imperial Valley League action.

Cindy and Claudia Lopez both scored 15, Marsela Valenzuela popped for 12 and Erica Baiz added 10.

Lizeth Lopez led Calexico with 20 points.

Calexico (11-7 overall, 2-1 IVL is at Central Union High on Friday for a 7 p.m. contest while Holtville (5-15 overall, 4-0) league is at Southwest High in El Centro at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Southwest 51, Imperial 43

The Southwest High girls basketball team improved to 2-1 in the IVL with a 51-43 win over Imperial in El Centro on Tuesday.

Tasha Ernest recorded her first double-double of the year with 14 rebounds and 12 points. Jessica Conway pulled down 16 rebounds and scored six points and Denice Rios added nine points and five assists for the Eagles.

Rhea Deal scored 14 points and had five rebounds and five assists for Imperial. Alexa Olstowski had five points and nine rebounds and Jennifer Stewart had eight points and four boards for the Tigers.

Imperial (1-2 IVL) plays at Calipatria at 6 p.m. Friday.

Central 52, Palo Verde 20

Stephanie Schuler erupted for 20 points Tuesday to lead Central Union to a 52-20 win over Palo Verde in El Centro.

Angelica Asaeli had seven points, 14 rebounds and two steals and Anna Gonzalez had nine points.

Central (6-9 overall, 2-2 IVL) hosts Calexico at 7 p.m. Friday.
