With the concept of an international cargo airport in Imperial County generating growing interest, a public forum has been set for Friday to give locals a chance to discuss the issue.
The forum, sponsored by the Imperial Valley Economic Development Corp., will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Plaza De La Cultura at the Imperial Valley Expo in Imperial. It is open to the general public.
The IVEDC is a nonprofit group made up of business leaders and community people from throughout the Imperial Valley.
The group's goal is to promote and market the Valley for the purpose of attracting new business and industry.
Officials from the IVEDC and from around the Valley have said the cargo airport, or international freight center, would be important for the Valley.
"Those of us who have been working really hard on this, we feel it is probably the single most significant opportunity to jump-start this economy that we have encountered at least in the last 15 to 20 years if not ever," said Lanny Foote, an El Centro attorney and chairman of the IVEDC board.
