Brawley wrestlers pin easy win

HOLTVILLE — The Brawley Union High wrestling team had little trouble disposing of Holtville High in Imperial Valley League action, winning 66-10 here Wednesday.

Leading Brawley were 119-pounder Esteban Mendez, Cesar Mendez at 130 pounds and Bobby Myers at 152, who all recorded pins. Alex Aguirre (160), Eric Encinas (189) and David Solis (215) also all picked up pins for the Wildcats (3-0 IVL).

Michael Duffy (125) and Tim Dowden (135) both won by decision for Brawley.

The Wildcats' Bobby Velasco (112), Stephen Moreno (140), Anthony Cardenas (145) and Richie Arriquive (heavyweight) all won by forfeit.

Julian Lopez at 103 pounds and James Hawk at 171 both picked up wins for the Vikings (1-2 IVL).

Both teams will compete in the Holtville tournament beginning Friday.

Calexico 45, Southwest 29

CALEXICO — The Calexico High wrestling team improved to 2-1 in the Imperial Valley League with a 45-29 win over Southwest here Wednesday.


Scoring pins for Calexico were Estevan Jimenez (114 pounds), Luis Lopez (125), Eddie Rodriguez (130), Aaron Barrios (140) and Mario Higareda (heavyweight). Brandon Quintero (189) won by decision and Eddie Garcia (105) and Rafael Contreras (171) won in walkovers for Calexico.

Leading Southwest (1-2 IVL) were 119-pounder Ramon Bastidas, Eddie Cortez (145) and Raul Gradillas (215), all getting up pins. Jose Luis Salazar (135), Eddie Conner (152) and Brian Robertson (160) all won by decision for the Eagles.

Both teams next compete in the Holtville tournament beginning Friday.
