Voice: Direct the anger at murderous actions of people, not religion

January 24, 2002

There are undoubtedly too many despicable men who use the Islamic religion as an excuse for murderous, evil actions. But when people make overbroad statements regarding inherent maliciousness of all adherents of the religion, I wonder if they know or care that they slander some of the members of the United States military defending us against extremists abroad.

In fact there are at least five Islamic chaplains serving in the different branches of the service today. One is stationed at Camp Pendleton.

Moreover, according to the Imperial County Historical Society, immigrants from the Punjab area of India settling in the Imperial Valley area early in the last century made peaceful contributions to the community. Some of these people were Muslims, although some were also Sikh or Hindu. This is important because even Sikhs and Hindi have been killed or hurt in hate crimes in America after Sept. 11.

The main thing is that anger over Sept. 11 is justified but it should be targeted and directed exactly as President Bush has done so, against persons responsible
