>> 50 years ago — El Centro offered its hospitality and its mechanical aid to a world traveler Sunday and joined other cities of the world in the diary of Dr. Franco Nacci of Palermo, Sicily, editor of Italia Mundo, a magazine published in Palermo. Nacci made a stop in El Centro to visit Sam Maggio.

>> 40 years ago — Demolition crews will make another search for a man feared dead since the Barbara Worth Hotel burst into flames a week ago. Demolition of the burned building has been listed as a $39,600 job.

>> 30 years ago — El Centro City Manager Leonard McClintock said he doesn't foresee any problems getting funding approval for El Centro's new sewage treatment plant, even though the city's engineering consulting firm has been linked with an ousted chairman of the state Water Resources Control Board.

>> 20 years ago — Perhaps to escape the record cold and snow, three Midwestern film crews have been doing stories on lettuce in Imperial Valley this week. While learning of whitefly damage and listening to agricultural officials lament, the crews have been basking in the Valley's balmy winter weather.
