WINTERHAVEN — A U.S. Marine died Saturday when the sport-utility vehicle he was driving — reportedly at 100 mph — crashed on Interstate 8 near here.
The Marine, whose identity was not released this morning by the California Highway Patrol, died shortly after the accident in an area hospital.
According to the Highway Patrol's Winterhaven substation, the man was driving about 100 mph when he attempted a lane change between two vehicles. His vehicle went onto the right shoulder and when he tried to steer back onto the roadway, he overcorrected.
The SUV went across two lanes and onto the left shoulder, then rolled several times, ending up in the center divide. Highway Patrol officials said the driver was ejected from the vehicle and thrown about 100 feet before landing in the center divide.
