February 04, 2002|STAFF REPORT

CALEXICO — Police responding to a 911 call that a man was breaking into meters in the downtown area became involved in a two-block foot pursuit Sunday.

Police nabbed 28-year-old Calexico resident Antonio Alvarado Barajas, who was booked into the county jail on suspicion of theft and theft with a prior offense.

The case started at 11 a.m. Sunday when a woman called police to report a man was breaking into parking meters.

When police arrived the man fled east on Third Street. Officers chased him for two blocks before they caught him.

Calexico police said Barajas has a previous theft conviction, which would make this case a felony if Barajas is convicted.

He remained in county jail this morning with his bail set at $5,000.
