>> 50 years ago — The Imperial Valley Press and The Morning Post were recipients Saturday of a high state award for their 50th anniversary edition published last April. The edition was judged second best by the California Newspaper Publishers Association.

>> 40 years ago — A cake was given to the Westmorland Fire Department by Quality Bakery of Brawley in appreciation of their work in fighting the Barbara Worth Hotel fire. The cake was the dessert at a dinner given for members of the department and their friends at the Westmorland station.

>> 30 years ago — The most recent survey of poverty-area residents in Brawley, El Centro, Calexico, Imperial and Westmorland conducted by the Economic Opportunity Commission shows 61 percent of the 350 persons surveyed are employed while 26 percent are unemployed and 13 percent are retired. Of those surveyed, 68 percent said they are interested in job training.

>> 20 years ago — A capacity crowd is expected Saturday night when Cruz Reynoso, the newest state Supreme Court justice and former Imperial Valley resident and lawyer, will be honored guest at the annual installation dinner/dance of the Hidalgo Society in Brawley.
