E.C. woman's death being probed

February 11, 2002|STAFF REPORT

The county Coroner's Office has ruled out foul play in the death of a 39-year-old El Centro woman whose body was found in a residence last week.

Authorities said they will wait for toxicology results to determine whether the cause of death was accidental or whether there were natural causes.

Regina Smith died sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. She had been visiting a male friend at his residence in the 1700 block of Main St.

That man told police Smith had fallen off the couch and he had left her on the floor to sleep off the alcohol she had consumed.

Authorities said they had no reason to believe the man's story was false. Still, they were initially treating the case as a homicide pending the autopsy that was done Saturday.

It could take several weeks for the toxicology results to be available.
