An outdoor service attended by family and close friends was held Saturday in Cornville, Ariz., for Gary Arnold Smith, 56, of Cornville, a former Imperial Valley resident who died Wednesday in Cornville.

Mr. Smith was born Sept. 14, 1945, in Hereford, Texas. He served in the U.S. Navy as an aviation machinist mate from 1962-66.

He worked as a police officer for the Brawley Police Department from 1969-71 and worked for Rigid Electric from 1978-82.

Prior to moving to Cornville, he owned Gary A. Smith Electric, which he continued operating in Cornville from 1992-2002.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William F. "Bill" and Elsye M. Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Mary "Mandy" Smith of Cornville; daughter, Tracie Smith of Alpine; granddaughters, Brenna and Kimberlin, both of Alpine; sister and brother-in-law, Suzanne and Richard Harriss of San Diego; and niece, Janet Stills of Brawley.



Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight in Hems Bros. Mortuary chapel in Calexico for Teresa Diaz, 71, of Calexico, who died Sunday in Brawley.

A prayer service will be at 7 tonight at the mortuary. Burial will be private

Mrs. Diaz was born June 6, 1930, in Villa Escalante, Michoacan, Mexico, and was raised there. She moved to the United States in 1973, settling in Calexico.

She married Pedro C. Diaz in Mexicali in 1963. She was a homemaker and spent most of her time taking care of her children.

She will be missed by all who knew her, according to family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pedro C. Diaz, on June 11, 1974.

Survivors include her son, Saturnino Diaz of Salinas; daughters, Maricela Diaz Ruiz, Isabel Harmon and Leticia and Rosa Diaz, all of Calexico; and several grandchildren.
