A 61-year-old San Diego area man was killed when his vehicle plunged off Interstate 8 near In-Ko-Pah Road and authorities today were trying to determine when the accident occurred.

The identity of the man has not been released pending notification of his family.

The accident scene was discovered about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday by a San Diego County Sheriff's Department helicopter unit in the area. The crew spotted the vehicle about 200 yards below the eastbound lanes of I-8.

Upon landing, the crew found the body of a man near the vehicle.

The Highway Patrol was called in to investigate the accident.

According to a Highway Patrol press release, the driver reportedly allowed his vehicle to drift off the north road edge onto the dirt shoulder, where it went off the roadway.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle.

County Coroner Investigator Deputy Gary Hayes said the accident may have occurred two to three days before the vehicle was spotted.

He said the cause of the man's death appeared to be blunt force trauma, although a final cause will not be determined until an autopsy is done Saturday.
