Imperial County officials have released the name of a 50-year-old La Mesa man who died after his Jeep plunged off Interstate 8 near In-Ko-Pah Road.

Imperial County Coroner Investigator Gary Hayes said Christopher May died about three or four days ago.

The accident scene was discovered about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday by a San Diego County Sheriff's Department helicopter unit. The crew spotted the jeep about 200 yards below the eastbound lanes of I-8.

The crew found May's body near his jeep. The Highway Patrol was called in to investigate the accident.

According to a CHP press release, May allowed his vehicle to drift off the north road edge onto the dirt shoulder, where it went off the roadway.

Hayes said the cause of death appeared to be blunt force trauma, although a final cause will not be determined until an autopsy is done Saturday.
