Brawley wrestlers get seven top seeds

Seven Brawley Union High wrestlers have drawn No. 1 seeds for Saturday's CIF San Diego Section Division IV tournament.

The Wildcats are the defending Division III champs but have dropped down a division this season. Brawley is favored to win the tournament, which begins at 9 a.m. at Clairemont High School in San Diego.

Also competing in the Division IV tournament are Calipatria, Holtville and Imperial highs.

Southwest and Central Union highs will compete Saturday in the Division III tournament at Ramona High School. Calexico High takes the mat Saturday in the Division II tournament at Eastlake High School in Chula Vista.

Tabbed as top seeds in the Division IV tourney are Brawley's Michael Soza (105 pounds), David Villagran (114), Michael Duffy (121), Tim Dowden (132), Stephen Moreno (137), Bobby Myers (147) and Mark Martinez (191).


Other local wrestlers seeded in the top three include Imperial's Miguel Campos (121 pounds, third seed), Brawley's Cesar Mendez (127, second), Holtville's Cody Acosta (127, third), Holtville's Edel Lopez (137, second), Brawley's Anthony Cardenas (142, second), Holtville's James Hawk (173, third), Brawley's Richie Arriquive (heavyweight, second) and Imperial's Manuel Miranda (heavyweight, third).

Among the top three seeds at the Division III tournament are Southwest's Steven Gonzales (127, third), Gabriel Sandoval (132, third), Eddie Conner (152, second) and Chris Gonzales (191, third).

The top four wrestlers in the Division IV tourney, the top five in Division III and the top seven finishers in Division II advance to the Masters Tournament.

To reach Clairemont High, take Interstate 8 to Interstate 5. Head north on I-5 to Balboa East. Head up the hill about a half-mile to the school.
