The annual Lake Cahuilla Trout Fishing Derby will be Saturday.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 Saturday. Advance tickets may be purchased today at Yellow Mart in Indio, Wal-Mart in Cathedral City and Sports Mart in Palm Desert.

There are three ways to win prizes at the derby. Many of the special trout planted for the derby will be tagged. Each tag number corresponds with a prize, including one for $500 cash.

Anglers can contribute $2 toward a jackpot. The money will be divided between those who catch the three heaviest trout. Last year nearly $1,000 was awarded in jackpot money.


Additionally, every fishermen will receive a raffle ticket when he or she enters the park Saturday. The drawing will be after the derby at 4:30 p.m.

Park gates open at 5 a.m. The derby ends at 4 p.m. A California fishing license is required at Lake Cahuilla. Licenses will be sold Saturday at the derby. Bait is available at the lake.

SAN GABRIEL — Alfredo Vazquez went two-for-five with three runs batted in Thursday to lead Imperial Valley College's baseball team to a 7-5 win over Compton College in the San Gabriel Valley Classic.

Humberto Cardenas also had two hits and drove in three runs for IVC.

The Arabs (3-2) face Chaffey College on Saturday in the tournament.

Jorge Renteria scored three goals as Southwest High's boys soccer team drilled visiting Palo Verde High 11-0 in El Centro on Thursday.

Alberto Merancio, Alfredo Garcia, Joshua Mora, Luis Montes, Juan Garcia, Armando Ponce, Sergio Rosales and Armando Burke all added one goal. Mora had four assists, Juan Garcia had two, and Rosales had one.

Southwest (8-0 Imperial Valley League) plays at Calexico at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

BLYTHE — Maria Velarde recorded another double-double Thursday before being sidelined by injury 40 seconds into the fourth quarter of Calipatria High's girls basketball team's 43-11 win over Palo Verde High.

Velarde had 11 points, 14 rebounds and five steals. Lillia Humble had 11 points and 14 boards for Calipatria and Rachel Zajdel added eight points.

Calipatria (14-7 overall, 5-3 Desert League) hosts Southwest High at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

BLYTHE — Diana Lopez scored a goal in each half Thursday as Southwest High's girls soccer team blanked host Palo Verde High 3-0.

Raquel Rogel added the other goal. Goalie Melissa Frausto had six saves.

Southwest (5-5 Imperial Valley League) hosts Calexico at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
