Fair tickets on sale

February 16, 2002

Advance tickets are on sale for the 2002 edition of the California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta.

The fair runs from March 1-10 at the Imperial Valley Expo. The theme of this year's fair is "Squeals on Wheels."

Advance admission tickets are $4.75 for adults, a $1.25 savings; children (6-12 years old) and seniors are $2.25, a 75 cents savings off regular admission prices. Advance ticket sales ends Feb. 28, the day before the fair opens.

Tickets may be purchased in all Valley Vons markets or at the fair box office at the Imperial Valley Expo.

Carnival pay-one price wristband coupons, good for Monday through Thursday, also are available for $15 (includes fair admission). Additionally, 36-ride coupon books are on sale for $15.

Ticket stubs on the advance tickets are good for a free admission to the 2002 San Diego County Fair from June 17 to July 7 in Del Mar.

Major entertainment at the local fair this year includes the Marshall Tucker Band, Three Dog Night and the Mariachi Sol de Mexico.

"We again have an outstanding lineup of talent and entertainment this year," said Bill Blair, Imperial Valley Expo chief executive officer.

Blair said one major change this year will be in the prices of the concerts. All special entertainment in the Granite Construction grandstand stage events center will be free, with the exception of stock car races March 9.

"We have been gradually working toward this goal for the past several years and this year, we have gone all the way," Blair added.

Additionally, all public safety and military personnel with identification will be admitted free March 5-7.

The fair's evening entertainment at the Granite grandstand will begin March 1 with the Marshall Tucker Band. A motorcycle parade will precede the concert, continuing with a tradition that began during the John Kay and Steppenwolf concert last year.

A classic car parade will kick off the Three Dog Night concert on March 2.

The nation's premier mariachi, Mariachi Sol de Mexico, will close out the fair's first weekend.
