County hits snag luring dairy

More than 100 dairies in the Chino and Corona areas will need to relocate and county officials hope they come here, but the county has run into a snag with the first dairy to show interest.

An overly enthusiastic member of the county's dairy attraction committee told the Leeuwen family, who want to build Bull Frog Dairy here, that building permit fees could or would be waived, county Planning and Building Supervisor Jurg Hueberger said.

The county Board of Supervisors tried to clear up the misunderstanding Tuesday by sending a letter to William Van Leeuwen showing the board's support for the dairy.

Pollution restrictions and housing development has put pressure on dairies in Chino and Corona to relocate. Hueberger said more than 100 dairies in the Chino and Corona areas will need to move.

The county spent thousands of dollars trying to attract a dairy, Hueberger said. He's been contacted by other dairymen interested in the Imperial Valley who are watching this transaction closely.

"We're in a glass bowl, being looked at by others on how we handle this," Hueberger said.

The proposed letter from the board states other funds, such as community development building grants and air pollution control funds, might be available to Bull Frog.

Ed McGrew of Holtville, who represents the Leeuwen family, said he thought the letter would be enough to satisfy the family's concerns.

According to county documents, Bull Frog is working to develop a dairy on the west side of the county.

Also at the board meeting, Supervisor Hank Kuiper announced he was diagnosed with cancer three weeks ago.

Kuiper said tests show he has malignant lymphoma concentrated in one spot in his neck. He has had tests and surgery since then and believes his treatments will be minimal.

Kuiper thanked the other board members, staff at the county, friends and associates for their support.
