An accusation over a stolen stereo led to a stabbing Saturday morning at the Country Life RV Mobile Home Park in El Centro.

Ernesto Aguero Zapien, a resident of the park, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after he reportedly stabbed Jorge Alejandro Alvarez, Imperial County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Pompeyo Tabarez said.

The suspect and victim are acquainted, Tabarez said. Several months ago Zapien alleged he saw Alvarez steal a stereo from one of his family's vehicles, Tabarez reported.

Zapien allegedly confronted Alvarez about it Saturday morning, which started an argument. The argument became a physical dispute, Tabarez said.

During the fight, Alvarez was allegedly stabbed in the leg by Zapien, Tabarez said.

The Sheriff's Office received a report of a physical disturbance at 2:20 a.m., Tabarez said.

While deputies were at the scene, El Centro Regional Medical Center reported a stabbing victim had arrived, he said.

Deputies met with Alvarez at the hospital but he was being worked on by doctors so a complete police report has not been submitted, Tabarez said.

Alvarez was later discharged from the hospital, a hospital spokesman said.

Zapien was still in jail Saturday night with bail set at $20,000.
