Letters to sports: Chew thanks players, fellow coaches, parents for support

February 17, 2002

The coaching staff and the girls basketball program at Calexico High School went through some difficult times this season and managed to work together under all these trying circumstances.

There were accusations made toward my actions and judgments as the head varsity girls basketball coach. Our program speaks for itself and our winning tradition proves we have used fair and good judgment.

I have taught, demonstrated and modeled that to be a good athlete, a player must be a good student. Learning the fundamentals of the game, good sportsmanship, acquiring self-discipline and understanding of team play, the girls have become better basketball players, students and citizens of their community.

I feel with all the adversity my coaching staff, the girls and myself have had to face this season, our success comes from dedication and teamwork. Notwithstanding all the distractions, outside interference, constant meetings, the media and the daily challenges of just preparing for the season, the team played and maintained academic success. I admire the team and coaching staff for their loyalty to the program.

This is the completion of my fifth year coaching and I am just as honored to have coached and represented Calexico High School this year as much as every other year. With all due respect to the nine young ladies on the varsity team who stuck it out until the end, in spite of the distractions, emotional stress, plus other pressures teens face today, I admire you ladies for playing your hearts out.

I am proud to say I have had the privilege to coach such a strong-willed group of committed players. I have watched each one of you ladies grow as a basketball player and as an individual. I would like to give you ladies some words of wisdom; dreams come true for those who work hard. Much of what we learned in basketball will carry you through a successful future. (Remember: progress or success isn't always measured in wins or losses but in how you feel about yourself). You are all winners in my eyes and I hope you continue to strive for academic and athletic achievement at Calexico High School.

To my assistant coaches, Mario Gonzalez and Jose BriseƱo, freshmen coaches John Glaser and Salvador Cuevas; thank you for your countless number of hours in the girls basketball program and for all of your moral support throughout the season. I couldn't have gotten this far without you guys. Keep up the good work.

To all the parents and their families who supported the team and the coaching staff: It has truly been a pleasure and an honor to have the opportunity to coach your daughters this season. I look forward to your continued support and appreciate all you have done for your daughters. Thank you for all the kind words and support at our games.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation and special thanks to my family, friends, teachers, parents, administrators, school board members, coaches at Calexico High, coaches throughout the Imperial Valley, alumni players, the student body at Calexico High and the community for standing behind my program during these tough times. Thank you for all your words of encouragement and support at our games.

In these times of trial, I have gained strength, courage and confidence. I will use this experience as a stepping stone toward my improvement and further success as a coach. My commitment is to continue to keep the girls basketball program successful by encouraging present underclasswomen and future high school prospects to work harder than ever before to maintain our high standard of success at Calexico High.

Once again, my thanks go out to all you supporters of the CHS varsity girls basketball program. I look forward to next year's season!
