>> 50 years ago — California's federal tax bill last year was more than that of the entire 48 states in 1934, Sen. William F. Knowland told a combined meeting of the El Centro Rotary and Kiwanis clubs.

>> 40 years ago — Calling it the "most economical way to meet the building needs of El Centro School District," the elementary school board approved a resolution of intention to purchase the present high school site and buildings. The purchase will hinge on the passage of the high school's bond March 6.

>> 30 years ago — A group of pickets protesting the development of geothermal energy for private profit greeted members of the Geothermal Resources Council at Imperial Valley College. A spokesman for the group, Hector "Zeke" Banaga of Brawley, protested the "exploitation of this conference by private developers."

>> 20 years ago — Back when other little girls were playing with dolls, Beth Hoyt Stephens must have been playing with pots and pans. Beth won her first cooking contest back when she was 13 and a student at Holtville Junior High School. On Tuesday, for the second year, she won the "masters" division of the carrot recipe contest, beating nine other cooks with lofty credentials.
