Letters to sports: Imperial's Miguel Campos fun to watch and a top wrestler

February 17, 2002

The Imperial High School wrestling team has had its struggles this year, with only one returning senior on the team. At 121 pounds, Miguel Campos is not the most imposing figure on the mat, but as my dad says he is a "pressure cooker."

Before a match he paces up and down the gym like a caged Tiger. His teammates come up and give him words of encouragement but he continues to pace. Of course he appreciates the words but he is locked into his concentration. Nothing will break it. He strips from his warm-ups, adjust his bulky knee pads, stretches his aching ankle and proceeds to slap himself. He says it gets his blood flowing. He slaps his forearms, shoulders, legs and thighs and everyone in the gym can hear the slaps.

I wonder where did he get this pre-match tradition from? A.J Smith, Caleb Smith or James Guizar? Who knows? But now it's his.

Miguel takes his stance with his toe on the line and the ref blows the whistle. A few times this year he has lost. Sometimes he gets a pin, but for the most part he has been winning. Check the statistics. He took first at several tournaments including Pine Valley, El Capitan, and Imperial.

I vote for Miguel Campos as the best and most modest wrestler at 121 pounds. I am very proud of you, Miguel. Keep up the good work.
