Imperial teachers reject latest contract proposal

February 18, 2002|By JENNIFER RALTON-SMITH, Staff Writer

IMPERIAL — The Imperial Teachers Association has voted to reject the latest contract offer proposed by the Imperial Unified School District.

ITA president Thomas Hepburn called the district's offer to its 132 teachers "an attempt by the administration to get something for nothing."

In a press release issued Friday, Hepburn stated the association will contact a state-appointed mediator to formally request an additional negotiating session between the parties.

He further stated there was some "encouraging news" in there had been some areas of agreement between the district and the teachers in that most of the compensation questions had been addressed.

The one compensation issue still under dispute, according to Hepburn, is one dealing with payment for teachers involved in "staff development."

IUSD trustees were unavailable for comment this morning.
