Sheriff's deputies apprehend suspected illegal immigrants following pursuit near Brawley

BRAWLEY — County Sheriff's Office deputies apprehended 20 suspected illegal immigrants after a short pursuit northeast of here today.

Sheriff's Sgt. Manuel Avila said a sheriff's deputy tried to stop a van about 1:07 this morning that was traveling north on Highway 115 near Shank Road. The van had a mechanical violation.

The driver of the van led the deputy on a short pursuit that ended on Highway 115 near Farr Road. Avila said when the van stopped 20 people ran out of the vehicle and fled from the deputy.

Avila added the deputy that chased the van caught 15 of the suspects about four minutes later. Another deputy who arrived during the search caught the other five suspects about six minutes after the van stopped.

All 20 suspected illegal immigrants were turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol.

Avila said deputies were not able to identity the driver among the 20 individuals.
