A 42-year-old Chula Vista woman and a 1-year-old boy from Florence, Ariz., suffered major injuries after a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 8.

A press release from the California Highway Patrol's El Centro office states the accident occurred about 12:30 p.m. Monday on Interstate 8 near Dunaway Road.

The press release states Beverly J. Jimenez was heading east on Interstate 8 at the posted speed limit when she allowed her pickup to drift into the center divider.

Jimenez tried to steer back onto the roadway but overcorrected and her truck overturned several times. The vehicle came to rest on the south dirt shoulder, trapping Jimenez and the boy.

Jimenez was wearing her seat belt and the boy was properly strapped into a child-restraint seat, which CHP officers think greatly reduced his chance of more serious injuries.

The boy was removed from the vehicle by witnesses. Jimenez was trapped in the truck and had to be removed by rescue workers using the Jaws of Life.

Jimenez was taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center before being was airlifted to University of California San Diego Medical Center with major injuries.

The boy was taken to El Centro Regional and airlifted to Children's Hospital in San Diego, also with major injuries.

A representative from UCSD Medical Center said Jimenez was in critical condition this morning.

Information on the boy's condition was unavailable.
