Teen-agers of the month announced

Brawley Union High School recently named senior Susana Monique Garcia and junior Joel Aguiar as teen-agers of the month for January.

Susana is secretary of the Junior Statesmen of America and a member of Project Star, Steps of Success and the Regional Occupational Program's nursing program.

She enjoys reading, drawing, spending time with her friends and family and "nursing by taking care of others who need my help."

Susana plans to enter Imperial Valley College's registered nurse program after graduating with a certified nursing assistant license from the ROP class. Her parents are José and Susana Garcia of Brawley.


Joel was Brawley High's junior varsity soccer team's captain and most valuable player in his sophomore year. He is president of Interact and Migrant clubs, vice president of peer court and earned a California arts medallion at California State Summer School for the Arts in Valencia.

He enjoys ceramics, painting, soccer, running, creative writing and chess.

Joel would like to run a five-minute mile and plans to pursue a career as an attorney. His parents are Jose and Hermelinda Aguiar.

The award is sponsored by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Brawley Lodge 1420.

Teen-ager of the month selections are judged on character, leadership, service, citizenship and scholastic achievements.
