Alatorre, Legaspi for Calexico council

February 23, 2002

There are six good candidates who could bring various skills and talents to the Calexico City Council and make it better. That group may be led by Alex Perrone, an intriguing new presence on the Calexico political scene.

Three other candidates, however, stand above those six. Ricardo Ortega, Javier Alatorre, and Henry Legaspi all have fine minds and considerable experience in Calexico politics and Calexico city government.

Ortega, who served a single term on the council that ended about 10 years ago, was known as a good, honest and forthright councilman in an era of considerable corruption and questionable deal-making in Calexico city business. Since leaving the council he has excelled as the leader of Calexico's Neighborhood House, a philanthropic group making a big difference for many of the less fortunate in Calexico.

As much as we like Ortega and think he would do a good job, we are endorsing Alatorre and Legaspi for the two four-year seats available.

Alatorre, the only incumbent running, has done a good job as a councilman and has shown he is not afraid to take a stand, even an unpopular stand, and is not reluctant to be the only council member dissenting on an issue if he thinks it is the right thing to do for the city. Alatorre can be hot-blooded, which is not always bad, but he once walked out of a council meeting, which is never good. He says he learned from the experience, and we believe he has. Alatorre is a passionate guy with his heart in the right place and he has grown into a tough job.

Legaspi is another one not afraid to tell people they are full of baloney if he thinks they need to hear it. He is an uncommonly smart man and as a former Calexico city manager, knows the city and its functioning better than almost anyone. His long history as a high-ranking official at the Imperial Irrigation District is another plus. He also is a personable man who knows the bumpy history of Calexico and how to keep it from getting back on that rough road. We think he would bring wisdom and a no-bull philosophy to the council.

So as much as we like Ortega and some of the other candidates, our choices for Calexico City Council are Javier Alatorre and Henry Legaspi.
