There are six good candidates who could bring various skills and talents to the Calexico City Council and make it better. That group may be led by Alex Perrone, an intriguing new presence on the Calexico political scene.
Three other candidates, however, stand above those six. Ricardo Ortega, Javier Alatorre, and Henry Legaspi all have fine minds and considerable experience in Calexico politics and Calexico city government.
Ortega, who served a single term on the council that ended about 10 years ago, was known as a good, honest and forthright councilman in an era of considerable corruption and questionable deal-making in Calexico city business. Since leaving the council he has excelled as the leader of Calexico's Neighborhood House, a philanthropic group making a big difference for many of the less fortunate in Calexico.
As much as we like Ortega and think he would do a good job, we are endorsing Alatorre and Legaspi for the two four-year seats available.
